Wesley Clark

“[my work] responds to my recognition of how intentionally the Black image has been co-opted & distorted; the devastating effects of those actions; and the need to counter those maneuvers. Each mingles with economics, government, value of life, and history, intertwined and layered throughout the individual works, creating a subtle yet-well established thread between the objects. ”

Wesley Clark creates mixed-media assemblages which situate historical and contemporary cultural issues relating to the black experience and identity in America. Clark incorporates found objects into his wood and metal assemblages, items which serve as conduits, summoning systemically silenced histories and creating a rift in the thin veil separating past from present.

Wesley Clark grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, and currently lives and works in Hyattsville, Maryland.  He received his BFA from Syracuse University in 2001 and his MFA from George Washington University in 2012.  Clark has shown work Nationally and Internationally including Washington D.C., Baltimore, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Nashville, Philadelphia, Germany, and Japan.  Wesley Clark has exhibited works at institutions such as the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, Washington D.C.; Columbia College Glass Curtain Gallery, Chicago, Illinois; and Prizm Art Fair, Miami, Florida during Art Basel. Clark has taught at George Washington University’s Columbian College/Corcoran School of the Arts and Design. He is a member of the D.C. based artists’ collective Delusions of Grandeur.
