Willful Wondering and Disorderly Notions

New Work by Patricia Bellan-Gillen

Tinney Contemporary is pleased to present Willful Wondering and Disorderly Notions- an exhibition of new work by Patricia Bellan-Gillen. Bellan-Gillan is recently retired after 29 years as a professor at Carnegie Mellon School of Art. She now lives and works in rural Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. Her work has been the focus of over 45 solo exhibitions in venues across the United States and in the UK. Willful Wondering and Disorderly Notions offers large-scale mixed media drawings and prints that blur the line between reality and fantasy. 

"Somewhere in my brain, personal narrative mixes with fairytales.  Historical events intertwine with the imagined and a veil of nostalgia blurs the border between fact and fiction.  Archetypal imagery moves about in the temporal lobe with cartoon characters and recent news flashes picked from the Internet join the sagas of black and white television. My drawings and mixed media works use these bits and pieces of visual history…the stones and bones of memory…to suggest a narrative and remix our stories.  These disorderly notions are exploited and employed in an attempt to engage the viewer’s associative responses and to jar the forgotten memories and the senses of wonder and wondering that often lay quietly below the surface. 

The sounds and meanings of words move me. After years of studying cultural, dream, mythological and religious symbols, I am beginning to believe that the most important signs are the images that appear and keep pressing on one’s mind with no explanation…unexpected but oddly recognizable visions that flash across the brain when words and phrases like “phantom Iimb,” “history and legend” or the refrain “DA-DA…DA-DA-DA-DA” from the old Rocky and Bullwinkle Show are heard…or the nascent compositions that appear while revisiting the pages of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland or thinking about the grand moral questions illuminated in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Honoring these puzzling visages maps the direction that I follow. This body of work combines ideas and imagery generated through study and research with ideas and imagery that are felt, intuitive and enigmatic. 

The work also celebrates a return to the fundamental act of drawing. I welcome provocation and puzzles. I would like my work to confront the viewer simultaneously with beauty and awkwardness and to mediate grace with humor."

Wild Encounters


New Work by David Yarrow
September 24 - November 12, 2016

Renowned for his preparation, perseverance, and patience in the field, David Yarrow maintains that in an era of information overload, there is "no room for the banal." He goes to extreme lengths in pursuit of the purest image possible, overcoming the challenges of shooting in some of the most desolate corners of the world. His unusual angles are the result of hours of research and elaborate planning, as well as countless trials and errors in the field. For Yarrow, photography is about active nature rather than passive observation, often creating a feeling of being sometimes unsettlingly close to the animal. African elephants tower, lions stare into the camera, tigers look up from the water, and rhinoceroses charge straight at the camera.

Yarrow was born in Scotland and is currently based in London. He began his photographic career recording the world's greatest sporting events. He was named Young Scottish Photographer of the Year at the age of 20 and in the same year covered the World Cup in Mexico for The Times, his photo of Maradona holding the trophy aloft remains an iconic image. Yarrow has since turned his lens on the natural world to capture its harsh and endangered beauty. African imagery is at the heart of the project Encounter, which was exhibited in November 2013 in Hong Kong, New York, and at London's Saatchi Gallery. He was shortlisted for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award 2013. Yarrow's most recent body of work, The Kenya Collection, was launched at the inaugural Christie's Conservation Lectures in aid of Tusk in April 2014.

He is the author of three photography books: Nowhere (2007), Encounter (2013), and Wild Encounters (2016). Many of the monochrome shots that feature in Encounter were captured in East Africa, and through some compelling narrative, Yarrow exposes his thirst to get both physically and spiritually close to the personalities of some of Kenya's most prized wildlife and cultures. Yarrow's photographic travels have given him genuine insights into key environmental and geopolitical issues. This knowledge is put to practical use in his long-term commitment to Tusk, the leading African conservation charity, for which he is the affiliated photographer. Tusk, whose Royal Patron is HRH the Duke of Cambridge, receives a percentage of sales of Yarrow's prints and books to support its 53 projects in 18 African countries. Yarrow continues to embark on exhibitions to some of the most remote corners of the world, capturing the unique and sometimes savage beauty of the natural world.

A Decade In The Making


A 10th Anniversary Exhibition
August 6 - September 17, 2016

Tinney Contemporary is pleased to present "A Decade in the Making," a two part exhibition commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the gallery. Established in 2006 by Susan Tinney, Tinney Contemporary was the second gallery to open on 5th Avenue and was a founding partner of First Saturday Art Crawl - a now beloved citywide event that will also be celebrating its 10th Anniversary in August. Since its inception, the gallery's focus toward presenting work that is collectible yet also thought-provoking and, at times, challenging has led the gallery to exhibit work by some of the top artists in the region and around the world. Most recently, the gallery hosted a three month long guest curated exhibition featuring work by internationally known street artists with the goal of bringing a significant contemporary art movement to Nashville.

The anniversary exhibition will feature works by Tinney Contemporary artists who have been with the gallery since the beginning as well as recent additions including Andy Harding, Anna Jaap, Béatrice Coron, Carla Ciuffo, Patricia Bellan-Gillen, Claire B. Cotts, Eduardo Terranova, James Perrin, Jane Braddock, Jason Craighead, John Folsom, Kuzana Ogg, Martica Griffin, Mary Long, Peri Schwartz, Sisavanh Phouthavong, Stefany Hemming, and Tom Brydelsky. The Kress Lobby Gallery will feature works by Mildred Jarrett, Jay Zerbe, Eric L Hansen and Leslie Bell. Exhibited works will be available to take home at time of purchase.


Brick To Canvas


A Survey of International Street Art
May 7 - July 23, 2016

Tinney Contemporary is pleased to present a two-part exhibition curated by the founders of the Nashville Walls Project, Tova Lobatz and Brian Greif. Brick to Canvas - A Survey of International Street Art is a multidimensional look into the world of contemporary street art, urban contemporary or new contemporary. All the artists represented have extensive experience painting murals and have been exhibiting in galleries and museums around the world. Brick to Canvas - A Survey of International Street Art is on view until July 23rd, 2016 at Tinney Contemporary and is free and open to the public.

Part I: May 7 - May 28:  Nashville Walls Project Exhibition:  In conjunction with the "Nashville Walls Project" inaugural mural project in Nashville, Tinney will show works by international street artists

Inside the gallery Herakut will be producing an experiential installation along with hanging 2D works. Herakut, Rone, Meulman and Renault will be in Nashville to paint public murals and will be present for the opening reception.

In addition, Tinney will also be exhibiting Banksy's "Haight Street Rat". The 7-foot tall beret wearing Rat is one of Banksy's most famous street paintings.  The public will be able to see the Rat for free during the course of the exhibit.

Part II: June 4 - July 23: This exhibit will feature original works by some of the biggest names in street art.

The Nashville Walls Project aims to bring internationally known street artists to Nashville. The founders, Brian Greif and Tova Lobatz, are art advisers and curators who met in San Francisco. Greif, based in Nashville, has spent a majority of his career in media, produced a number of movies (including "Saving Banksy", a documentary about the infamous piece that will be hanging in Tinney Contemporary in May), and has been involved in the arts for decades. Lobatz, based in San Francisco, was the director of the leading urban contemporary gallery in the United States. She has founded her own public arts organization in San Francisco and continues to advise private collections, corporations, and curates independently. 



New Work by Kuzana Ogg
March 19 - April 23, 2016

Tinney Contemporary is pleased to present Yasna, a solo exhibition of new work by Kuzana Ogg. Born in Bombay in 1971, Ogg absorbed and retained all of the colors, noises, and smells of both the traffic-ridden, crowded city and her grandparents' insular, paradisiacal home. Inspired and informed by her early childhood spent in India with her grandparents, the tones and shapes within her work serve the same purpose as the lush gardens and coconut trees surrounding her grandparents' home: to mitigate the noise and bustle just beyond them. 

At an early age, Ogg moved to London with her little sister to be with her immigrant parents. There, she was struck by the harsh differences between life in hectic Bombay and orderly London. While she shuttled back and forth to boarding schools during her time in London, she held onto her Bombay roots. As a result, the fragrant perfumes, epic traffic jams, and general pandemonium of her homeland have become significant influences on Ogg's work.

Her aesthetic relies on the principles of balance and restraint - concepts that she finds crucial considering the breadth and complexity of the multi-faceted painterly language that developed as she moved from place to place. These key principles also serve as buffers to the outside chaos on the other side of the precious garden wall and, in a broader sense, the chaos we all experience in day-to-day life.

Kuzana Ogg graduated from SUNY Purchase in 1995.  After living in South Korea for six years Ogg returned to the United States in 2001, settling in California's Central Valley in 2012. Ogg has participated in two residencies: in Red Wing, Minnesota, and in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Her paintings have been included on the sets of both television shows and feature films - the most recent of which were Me Earl and the Dying GirlSouthpaw and My All-American. Ogg's first solo museum exhibition was Oil at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art in 2014. A second solo exhibition followed shortly thereafter, Rev Zero, at the Bakersfield Museum of Art in 2015. Her work has been exhibited, published, and collected both privately and publically, nationally and internationally.

Drip Paintings


New Work by Jane Braddock
February 6 - March 12, 2016

Tinney Contemporary is pleased to present Drip Paintings - an exhibition of new work by Jane Braddock. Braddock has traveled widely beginning with East Africa in 1971. Her trips have informed her life as well as her art. In 1996 after a powerful trip to Tibet, and including a return to India and Nepal, her work changed dramatically. While reading Gita Mehta's Karma Cola she was electrified by the word Shakti- and felt intuitively that it described her new work. In Hinduism, Shakti is the divine feminine force of creation and is considered Shiva's 'other half'- he who gives that form consciousness. Braddock found the color of India spilling from memory into her new work and she began painting vibrational fields of light.

This Shakti series has deepened and expanded over the years. The most dramatic change has been the addition of text to the paintings. Earlier paintings had been titled with fragments of poetry, prose, song lyrics, and book titles. About 5 years ago, the words themselves entered the paintings and became another layer of patterning within the whole.

As technique morphed from brush strokes to dots to letterforms to spatters, the drip paintings were born. She discovered that the drips stimulated her original fascination with color juxtaposition and its capacity to spark various non-verbal states. Some of these paintings have text- others do not. They are the vanguard of her latest journey.

Braddock has a BFA from Syracuse University. After 15 years as a textile designer and colorist in NY, last working for Brunschwig et Fils, she moved to Nashville which became her home. For over 30 years she has been an abstract painter. Her works are collected locally and nationally.
