A SHOW CURATED BY JASON LASCUApril 7 - May 19
Closing Reception: May 5th, 6-9 pm
Tinney Contemporary is pleased to host a themed exhibition that is entitled, to be human . . . which takes a close look at the figure in contemporary artwork. This show curated by Jason Lascu depicts figurative works by five diverse artists, including: James Croak, Christina West, Lyle Carbajal, Jason Lascu, and Eef Barzelay. The works in this exhibition explores the human form which has endured as a powerful subject throughout the history of art and share their individual stories of what it means to be human.
"The show initially began as a chance for me to merely curate my first exhibition. I began by merely picking artists whom I liked, both in terms of the mediums and aesthetics. I quickly realized that I was bringing together an distinctive group of artists that brought a unique perspective to the human figure. Even though some depict childhood, identity, personal history and social change, my curatorial process quickly grew into an incredible opportunity to bring together figurative art that captures the diversity and complexity of the human experience. Despite the artists' different approaches to representing the figure and eclectic use of mediums used to create them, the artists are bound by their sustained engagement with the figure and their ability to create visual stories and unique narrative context. The works selected for this exhibition not only capture the storytelling motif, but push the viewer into questioning what it means to be human. The art forces the observer to challenge their own perceptions of the ideas and environments presented within the work, and the impact it has on the viewer." -Jason Lascu, Guest Curator
